Stryker Corporation, a $14.4b medical technology company focused on orthopedics, neurotechnology and spine, acquired Gauss Surgical, a developer of artificial intelligence-enabled technology for real-time monitoring of blood loss during surgery. Gauss Surgical’s Triton system leverages a computer vision app and iPhone to measure a patient’s blood loss via imaging of sponges, towels and canisters of fluid in addition to calculating volume of weighed items. The AI technology helps recognize hemorrhages -- leading to earlier intervention in maternal and surgical care. Up to 5% of mothers experience a post-partum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal death globally. Gauss has also been developing a digital smartphone platform paired with a rapid antigen test for the coronavirus, which will be spun out as a separate company after the Stryker acquisition. Terms not announced.
